Welcome to the University of Oregon History Department. We are a group of scholars and teachers with a passion for understanding the past in all its dimensions. With over thirty full-time members and several participating instructors, our distinguished and innovative faculty offers courses and conducts research on the history of classical antiquity, Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, colonial North America and the United States, and the world as a whole.

The breadth and depth of our courses encourage undergraduate history majors at the University of Oregon to learn about the variety of human experiences across time and space. Our approach is intended to help our students become knowledgeable about the complexities of the past, to learn to think critically and to acquire analytical and writing skills that prepare them for success in numerous areas of work and study. History majors with degrees from the UO have gone on to work as teachers, journalists, in museums, libraries, and the law, in government agencies, and in big and small business, anywhere that a high value is placed on an ability to process and interpret information and to convey that knowledge in a coherent, accessible way. Our graduate students immerse themselves even more deeply in the latest scholarship in order to develop research projects that contribute in significant ways to an understanding of the past, and play a vital role in the department’s teaching mission as well.
